Held mostly between the months of December and March, the festival draws domestic and international tourists alike. Luxury tents are set up to accommodate the increasing footfalls and the village is lined with food and handicraft stalls. This helps boost the income of the locals as well. The packages offered during this time usually include sightseeing charges to nearby attractions. A midnight camel safari during the festival is believed to be the best way to see the surreal beauty of the desert.
Craft villages – As the Rann of Kutch is geographically not susceptible to much agriculture, the main occupation and source of livelihood for locals is handicrafts. It could be said that handicrafts are a way of life here which adds majorly to the Kutch experience and draws tourists and art lovers to Kutch from various corners of the world. The tiny villages that dot the area each specialize in a unique form of art and craft. There are close to 30 villages which specialize in different kinds of embroidery. With help from various organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, these villages are now reaching the point of sustenance based solely on handicrafts. Dhordo, in particular, specializes in an art form known as Mutua embroidery which basically refers to mirror work, leather embroidery and silver jewellery.
