By Bus - Jharkhand is connected to other states in India by several bus services. Cities like Ranchi and Jamshedpur are connected to other cities such as Patna, Gaya, Hazaribagh and Kolkata by buses. Bus tickets can be booked online. Many of the cities within Jharkhand are also interconnected by bus. There are deluxe and luxury bus services to and from Jharkhand as well as overnight buses which leave at 9pm.
By Road - As the road network is good in and around Jharkhand, it’s easy to take to the road if you plan to reach cities like Ranchi or Jamshedpur by car. While you can always drive down in your own car, you can also opt for rental services with a hired driver as this can make things easier. However, most road links are from the north and east and as the western part is mountainous and tricky. Road links to the south are also being developed.
Jharkhand does not have too many domestic airports and only one international airport in its capital city of Ranchi. The Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi receives flights from all major cities in India such as Delhi, Patna, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata to name a few. Major airlines such as IndiGo, Spicejet, Air India and Vistara operate from here and have daily flights to numerous cities. The airport is around 7km from the city centre and even though it’s a small airport, it’s busy since there are cheap flights to and from various cities in India.
Outside the airport, there are private and general taxis that take you to your destination in the city. While passengers exiting the airport can book taxis on apps such as Ola, there is also a prepaid taxi counter that is being planned which will help passengers book cabs online or from inside the terminal building as this is quite convenient. The nearest bus stand is Kantatoli Bus Stand which is at a distance of 4km from the airport. Private taxis can take you to the bus stand from the airport if you wish to take a bus to the city.
Here are some of the other airports in Jharkhand:
There are plans to build a new international airport in Deoghar which should be ready in 2020.
The railway network in Jharkhand is competent, allowing you to travel to and from cities like Ranchi and Jharkhand. Ranchi has one railway station – Ranchi Railway Station which receives trains from cities like Delhi, Patna and Kolkata. Another station nearby is Hatia Railway Station which also serves Ranchi and there are trains such as Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Lokmanya Tilak Express to name a few. Some of these trains run only twice a week while some run on all days except Sunday. It’s best to check the schedule before you book. Jamshedpur has a railway station known as Tatanagar which connects to several major cities in the country.
By Bus
Local buses are a convenient way to travel around the city. However, they are often crowded because they are cheap. Important bus stands in Ranchi are Birsa Bus Terminus, Ratu Road Bus Stand and State Transport Bus Terminal. Local bus network in other cities such as Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad are also well-developed, helping commuters and travellers get around the city with ease.
By Auto
Autos here do not run on meter and have fixed fares based on the route. But there are also share autos here and it is a common enough sight to see numerous passengers crammed inside as they navigate through the streets of Ranchi or any other Jharkhand city. Also, don’t be too surprised to see pink autorickshaws which are driven by women, ferrying passengers. Do make sure you have at least an idea of what rates are supposed to be before you get inside an auto and fix the fare before the ride begins.
By Taxi/Cab
Taxis are a good option to see the city, although a little more expensive than autorickshaws. There are online taxi services from where you can book a taxi that will take you around the city for a fixed fare. You can also book taxis from local travel agents or from your hotel reception and be on your way to sightseeing and visiting nearby attractions. However, do make sure to negotiate your prices. Cars come in all ranges such as luxurious, AC, non-AC and they are priced accordingly.
Recently, Uber and Ola have also begun their services in Ranchi. These have certainly made life easier for travellers as they can book the cabs to the locations they wish to visit from apps on their phones.
By Minibuses
Whether it’s Ranchi, Jharkhand or Dhanbad, minibuses are a common feature in Jharkhand. They are convenient and can be found everywhere. However, you need to negotiate the fares with the driver before you begin the ride.
By Walking
Some of the cities in Jharkhand such as Jamshedpur and Dhanbad are good for exploring on foot. While you won’t be able to access all attractions, there are certain places you can check out by walking. For instance, in Dhanbad, there are plenty of trekking opportunities in the woods and people also like to go on walking trips to the Parasnath mountain which is a Jain pilgrimage site.
