Sao Tome and Principe Tourism

It is also called the mouth of hell and is situated few kilometers to the south of Sao Tome. It is formed due to waves entering into narrow channels with force. The scene is very unusual and dramatic.

Café e Companhia : It is by far the most popular among tourists. It is also called as MJ’s café, named after the manager, Maria Joao.

Sum Sectreto: It is also a famous restaurant where you can go without prior booking. They have mouth watering fish and meat dishes. Even though not very fancy, it offers excellent service.

Due to small area of the islands, the crop production is less which leads to import of basic crop food. The typical food crops of the country are banana, breadfruit, taro, maize, beans, papaya etc. They have large production of coffee, cocoa and copra which they export.

Most of the fun on these islands take place in restaurants which host live music shows. The Café Companhia hosts live music jazz night on every Thursday.

The country does not have drinking culture but beer can be bought from anywhere at island. The blue lagoon is a local hub for drinking.Bar Tartaruga is the famous one situated at Illheu das Rolas with a nice beach view. It has been ranked as the best by tourists.

Rundu open marketis an African style market that operates in co-ordination with activities of local people. It is open from Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. till 9 p.m. The local people promote their business by selling hair dressing products, sewing and key making etc.

There is scope for limitless adventure in Sao Tome and Principe. You can go for world class scuba diving around the coast and explore the underwater world. The warm and clean waters of Sao Tome and Principe have rich aquatic life including octopus, green sea turtles, muraenas etc.

Santo Antonio da Ponta da Mina Fortress is a fort built in 1695, the ruins of which can be seen even today at Principe. Ruins of fortress Sao Jeronimo located at Sao Tome are also popular among tourists. San Sebastian Fort of Sao Tome was built in the year 1575 and is still in good condition. This best preserved fort also contains a museum and a lighthouse that was built in the year 1866.

Though spectacularly beautiful, Sao Tome and Principe lacks in major attractions for kids. They do not have any amusement parks or theme parks but they do have various natural parks and plantations. If your kids love swimming, they will enjoy at Sao Tome and Principe because it has many un-crowded and clear beaches. Kids can even enjoy turtle and whale watching. The museums of Sao Tome and Principe are rich in historic artifacts which attracts kids.

The fort of San Sebastian has been converted into a museum in 1976 which has numerous religious art collections and artifacts from colonial times. The fort itself was built in 1575 and serves as a heritage building. One of the major attractions for this museum is the remains of a cacao king kept in a box under his painting.
