This is a historic town. It has Southern United States-style architecture because the country was originally formed by the freed slaves who came from the United States. It is not far from Monrovia and offers a cultural insight into the lives of the farming community here.

The Matilda Newport Cannon is located at Fort Norris on Ducor Hill. There is an interesting story behind this cannon.The story goes back to the times of early settlement when Americo-Liberian colonist Matilda Newport saw native Liberians coming to attack and she used her pipe to fire the cannon that scared the natives away.

There are a number of upscale restaurants in Monrovia and you can try out a number of international cuisines. If you are looking for a cheaper option then the local cooks shops are ideal for trying out authentic Liberian cuisine.

Liberian food is generally rice based that is topped with a spicy sauce made from meat or fish, leaves and palm oil. The specialties of the country are goat meat shop, Monrovian coconut pie, butter soup with crab claws or prawns and even chicken. Goat meat soup is also a delicacy here.

In Liberia, music is very much a part of the culture. You can hear different types of drums used and played during ceremonies such as weddings, graduations etc. The country has its own heritage of music and instruments.

For the safest bars, head to the places you will find around the US embassy in Monrovia. The ideal days to visit bars for some action is Wednesdays and weekends.

You can pick up African ritual masks, fertility symbols, pottery, ethnic musical instruments and planet of other things including the traditional tie-dye fabrics. There are many craft enclaves in downtown Liberia that you can check out.

You must visit the Waterside Market in Monrovia. No visit to the country is complete without a visit to this market.

If you swear by adventure, Liberia is the country that will never disappoint you. The golden beaches of the Atlantic offer some of the most adventurous water sport. The most popular among them is surfing.

Enjoy a relaxed sightseeing of pristine countryside on horseback away from the milling crowds or just laze around basking in the sun on the beach or on a sailboat.

This is the place where all the presidents take their oath. For many decades, all formal events of the government are held here. The head of state for 27 years, President Tubman was also buried here. There are many monuments and statues on the grounds of the pavilion.

There is a resort that is quite upscale and makes for a very comfortable stay. The island has dozens of rescued chimpanzees which are sure to be great fun for the children and adult alike.

This was established in 1822 by the Africans who emigrated from America. It was established to preach Christianity to the natives in Liberia.

Located in the centre of Monrovia, National Museum of Liberia is worth a visit. It has a collection of very interestingly carved and traditional painted masks. Tribal musical instruments are also on display here.

Sapo National Park is the country’s only national park and covers more than 1808 sq.km. The lush rainforest has plenty of wild life that includes pygmy hippos, forest elephants, chimpanzees, antelopes and much more. It takes n entre day to reach this park from Monrovia. The park is home to the last remaining primary rainforests of Africa.

This is a natural wonder as it has an eerie resemblance to a human face. This area is in Paynesville and has other interesting rock formations which are very near Monrovia.
