If you get tired of sightseeing and want to party then proceed to Playa Tamrindow with the most happening of bars and hotels and also some of the most beautiful beaches.

There is nothing unique about Costa Rican shopping but you can of course pick up a lot of souvenirs such as handicrafts, carved wooden items, masks, replica of pre-Columbian jewelry and leather goods. You can visit the villages for more variety in locally made souvenirs and also keep an eye out for coffee shops to purchase locally produced coffee as a gift or for self-consumption.

The capital has quite decent malls from where you can pick up clothes or other necessities. The Central market has a good collection of handmade wooden furniture and other general items.

Adventure activities such as hiking, snorkeling, diving are some of the mot popular activity. Surfing is also quite the craze here among locals and visitors and thus the county is also referred to as the “Hawaii of Latin America.” Both the Pacific and the Caribbean coasts offer surfing break. Hiking in Rincon de la Vija national Park should be given a try. White water rafting along the river Rio Toro and horseback riding along in the Rancho La Merced National Wildlife Refuge  are also a must do in Costa Rica.

As you relax on the pristine beaches, you will be also delighted to spot many turtles that come ashore to lay eggs. On the Caribbean cost, the Playa Blanc beach is a great site for sunbathing as well as snorkeling. The pacific end, the white sands of Playa Flamingo will beckon you.

Located on the slopes of the Turialbo, a volcano, this is an archeological site which still has many unexplored areas. The site has bridges, houses and petro glyphs which are believed to be 3000 years old.

This city used to be the capital of the country but always used to succumb to earthquakes. It was abandoned in 1823 and in 1910 a major earthquake destroyed the beautiful Romanesque cathedral here too. The ruins are now a site visited often by tourists.

This is the most venerated religious site in Cartago and the whole country. The architecture is Byzantine and beautiful stained glass and hand painting in the interiors make this a beautiful place of worship dedicated to La Negrita or the black virgin.

This is located towards the east of Parque Central in San Jose. It is built in Renaissance style with interiors featuring elegant Spanish floors, stained glass and a 17th century Christ figure.

Located in the city of Liberia, it is the oldest church here. It is a must watch brick relic which although closed to the public has a surrounding area with a nearby park and has become a favorite walking spot.
