The Great Elephant Race organized by the Tourism Department of Kerala is a colorful extravaganza starting on January 17th and lasting for a period of four days. In this race around 101 fully caparisoned elephants are marched from Thrissur to Kovalam. This grand march concludes at the Kovalam beach amidst a lot of fervor and festivities.

The most famed and legendary Arumanoor Koyikkavilakom Sree Bhadrakali Devi Temple is situated near in the Thiruvananthapuram District. This temple has a powerful story behind it. The all-powerful and benign Arumanoor Koyikkavilakom Sree Bhadrakali reigns eternally at Arumanoor and nurses her devotees. Arumanoor Koyikkavilakom Sree Bhadrakali is believed to be the incarnation of three legendary Goddesses and is very popular among religious people. Tourists from distant places come here to seek blessings from this Godessess. Kaliyoot festival is divinized only with the shrine and supreme presence of the divine idols of the three goddesses. There are three idols in the sanctum sanctorum. This is only one temple in Kerala where the three Goddesses were represented in the Kaliyoot Mahotsav.

A visit to Kalaripayattu, the martial art village to peek a glimpse in the history of the oldest form of martial art will is surely one of the best things to do in Poovar.

One of the prime beach destinations, Vizhinjam has a natural sea port filled with natural beauty. Few Kilometres from Poovar, Vizhinjam is located, that is close to the Kovalam Beach too. The annual Nishagandhi Dance and Music Festival is held from February 22nd to 27th at the Kanakakannu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram. Earlier, the palace was served as the cultural venue for the erstwhile Maharajas of Thiruvananthapuram. Ethnic dance and music performances by artists from all over India are held during the festival.

The feast of Christ the king is celebrated with much fervour and enthusiasm at the ‘Madre De Deus’ Church near the city of Trivandrum. On the feast day, the image of Christ the king is taken out in a colorful procession followed by a traditional High Mass, Eucharistic procession and benediction.
