The Hexagon is one of the five major monuments in Queenstown which residents take great pride in. The Hexagon occupies the primary spot and the original hexagon layout is unique in the world. The idea behind this design was the improvement of defenses of the settlement along every street, radiating like the spokes of a wagon wheel from the central point. Thankfully there was no event in history where it became necessary to fire shots in anger. Subsequently, the Hexagon was used mainly as a busy marketplace but it was later converted into a scenic spot, complete with gardens and a gurgling fountain. This has been declared as a National Monument of Queenstown.
