Raigad is the capital of the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's kingdom. This is also where he died. The fort is placed on top of a wedge-shape hill. It cannot be accessed from three sides and is split off from the western ghats. Fables of heroic deeds and incredible valour of the great Maratha ruler are imprinted on each pebble of this fort.

The Raigad district's Sahyadri mountain range is home to the hill fortress Raigad Fort. It is housed at about 2,700 feet elevation above the sea level. One needs to climb more than fourteen hundred steps to reach this magnificent fort. The Gibraltar of the east is another famous name given to this fort. In the year 1030 the fort was built by Chandra Rao Mores. In the year 1674, the fortress became a capital of Maratha king ShivajiMaharaj. Alongside the fort remains the beautiful Ganga Sagar Lake, which is a man-made lake. In front of the main market, avenue is where a statue of ShivajiMaharaj is erected; this avenue also leads to Shivaji's Samadhi and JagdishwarMandir.
