There aren't that many monuments on this island, but one of the oldest cities is located here. The city is called Papeari and it was originally settled sometime during 400 to 500 AD. One of the famous artists from the island, Paul Gaugin, lived in this area.
Lining the island are things called marae that, are stone structures that are huge and are considered sacred. These structures were places of worship and were like temples to the people of the island.
