Paris is the city that stands witness to the evolution of European history. Consequently, this city bears relics of every phase of history and depiction of every period of culture within city limits. First of all there is EiffelTower which has now become an icon for the city itself. Put up in 1889, as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair by the engineer Gustave Eiffel, EiffelTower has become a recognised structure for every tourist to see. The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile or, Arch of Triumph of the Star is another best known monument in Paris. Originally erected to honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars, it now stands as a symbol for revolutionary spirit all over the world.
Like any established old city Paris is also built on a river side. Paris is beautifully situated on the banks of River Seine. On the banks of the river, lies The Conciergerie, the former prison of Paris. This monument is a part of the Palais de la Cité, the former royal palace of France. This building has history written into every inch of its architecture, if only walls could talk, they will tell you tales of time immemorial. A trip to Paris is never complete without a visit to the Conciergerie.
