Situated on the island of Goree in Senegal, right off the mainland, the Maison des Esclaves happens to be a museum and monument that commemorates the Africans who were lost in the slave trade. The name Maison des Esclaves translates into “slave house” and was once the primary hub for slave traders who established Goree as their base of operations from 1536 until the year 1848 when the abolishment of French colonial slavery began in full swing.
