Places to visit in Lumbini

The MyanmarGoldenTemple, otherwise called as ‘Lokamani Pula Pagoda’ is a beautiful structure of white and shiny gold closely in resemblance with the Yangon Shwe-dagon Pagoda. This is one of the oldest structures in the compound. It has three prayer halls inside its premises. The first one is the tower on top that is in corncob shape similar to Bagan styled temples. Next one, the Lokamani Pula Pagoda, is in South Burmese Style.

InternationalGautamiNunsTemple is an exact copy of the Kathmandu Swayambhu Stupa.

ChinaTemple has prayer rooms, pagodas, and meditation halls within its complex.

KoreanTemple is located across the road to the ChinaTemple. It is known as DaeSungSukGaSaKoreanTemple.

Japan Peace Stupa is 41 meters in height. It has four Buddha statues in all four cardinal directions of the Stupa. It was built by the Japanese Nippon Jon Kyohoji. In addition, you can also find temples and monuments belonged to Germany, France, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

Children will surely find these places interesting as it has a rich history. The beautiful monasteries and stupas has an enigma that will keep everyone captivated.

This is the temple for the Mother of Buddha “Maya Devi”. In 1992 excavations proved that the temple was built 2200 years back. The main idol is a sandstone carving for the birth of Buddha in 14th century by Malla King, Ripu Malla. There is a sacred pond beside the temple where Maya Devi had bath. All around the place there were ruins that dated back from the 2nd century to the 9th century.

It is at the north end of the monastic zone and is devoted to everything about Buddha and his life. It showcases photographs and artefacts from the different Buddhist sites all around the world. Time of visit - Wednesday to Monday during 10am to 4pm.

This is the most popular tourist destination of Lumbini.  It is the place where Lord Buddha was born. To show due respect to Lord Buddha, there were lots of stupas, temples and monasteries that was built around this place. On the stone pillar built by Emperor Asoka, the account of Lord Buddha is inscribed. This makes it a must visit place.

The idol in this temple is 1700 years old. It faces the place where Lord Buddha got enlightenment. 

This is the holy pool near the temple for Maya Devi. It is said that Queen Maya Devi had her bath before giving birth to prince Siddhartha. In addition, as a prince, Siddhartha also had his bath here. The water is emerald Green in color and the stairs are made of bricks.

Buddhists consider it as one of the sacred places as it was the birthplace of Lord Buddha. He was born here during the 6th century and tourists from all around the word flock the city to see the holy place. This is situated at a distance of 27kms from Lumbini. Lumbini tourism packages include this city as well as the must see places.

This is constructed in the memory of Indian Emperor Asoka’s visit to Lumbini and was built in 249 BC. This is a sandstone pillar. This pillar was lost and rediscovered in 1896 by Khadga Shumsher Rana, the Governor of Palpa. It is successfully restored to the front of MayaDeviTemple.

This is the place for ‘mahaparinirvana’.  This is the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. History says, the prince Siddhartha arrived at the village called ‘senai’, sat on a grass mat and started meditating under the Fig tree. He had a final resolution that not to get disturbed till he find solution. Now, this is the number one pilgrim site for the Buddhists.
