History of Thailand

There is plenty of evidence to indicate that Thailand had human settlements from 20,000 years ago. Copper, bronze and iron productions have been found in certain sites to show that these were well-established civilizations with a strong cultural background.

The first settlers in Thailand were the Thai ethnic group, who find a mention in Chinese chronicles from 6th century BCE. Thailand has had several kingdoms, some of which are Khmer and Pagan, who later gave way to the Sukhothai kingdom which is recognised as the first Thai kingdom by mainstream Thai history. Several more kingdoms, battles and accessions later, it was Rama 1 who first consolidated the lands to form Thailand as we know it today. The world wars and the cold war brought about economic hardships, which were overcome after the wars ended. It was only in 1988, after much internal instability and unrest that Thailand got its first elected prime minister. Today the country shows considerable economic power and is counted among the regional powers of South East Asia.
