Kalimpong Tourism

Kalimpong is a must visit for flower lovers specially. This town has many flower nurseries. Roses, cacti, dahlias and orchids are found in these nurseries at a very large scale. Some nurseries in Kalimpong are Midland Nursery, Nursery International, Flower Wood Nursery and Kamal Pradhan & Sons. 

It’s spread over an area of 88 kms. It has a diverse range of flora and fauna. The fauna consists of red panda, lesser cuckoo, barking deer, black bear, civet, mountain hawk eagle and various other endangered species. It is an adventurous place for nature lovers to explore.

It is located near ScienceCity and consists of a huge statue of Lord Hanuman of 25-30 ft high. Right in front of the statue there is a small temple of Goddess Durga. It is not only a religious place but even from where there is a splendid view of both sides of the hill.

Established in 1962, it is a charming monastery also known as Bhutanese Monastery. It is the oldest monastery in Kalimpong and is one of the finest places for meditation. 

It was set up by the forest department in the year 1990 and is an EcologicalMuseum. It is one of the most unique museums one can ever come across and even spreads awareness about the environment. 

It is an attractive tourist destination mainly because of the royal look and excellent architecture present here. It is actually a cottage that was built by the British and is a symbol of their architecture. It is open to the public all days in a week. 

Kalimpong has quite a few good places to eat in and are some of the must tries. Fresh Bite Restaurant has a huge range of international cuisine available. Gompu’s Bar and Restaurant is famous for the pork momos and the chilled beer served with garlic chili potatoes. Kalimpong is also known for the bakeries that are present there. One of the most famous and popular bakery in Kalimpong is 3C’s offering a variety of savories. 

Mei Foon and Chicken Drumsticks from ChinaGarden are very delicious. The best momos in town is found in Gompus. 

It was founded in 1900 by Dr. John Anderson Graham. This institution also has a hospital, poultry, bakery, farmhouse and clothing department. May Fair is a festival that takes place in Dr Graham’s Home every year. There is even a carol service that takes place every year during November

Check out the fabulous handicrafts, homewares or even purchase to contribute to the development of the Maasai women, Arusha is a shopping destination that offers various shopping areas for those who are interested. From Schwari, to Mt. Meru Curios and Crafts Market, Arusha also has a mall called Cultural Heritage. If small shops do not interest you, then you can visit the Central Market or SokuKuu and stroll about for an hour or two.

Samco Ropeway

It is located over two rivers, Teesta and Relli. This gives an unforgettable adventurous experience to tourists and a fascinating view that they can enjoy of the rivers.

 Samthar Plateau

It is one of the most interesting places to visit. It has a unique charm that shall leave one with memorable moments. Mt.Kanchenjangha is brightly visible from this plateau. It even offers adventurous activities such as biking and hiking. This plateau is even considered a place for bird lovers. 

Founded in 1897, it is located in the heart of the town. It promotes a variety of local handicrafts such as jewellery, scrolls and masks. The local artists and craftsmen are taught painting, tailoring and dyeing too.

It is surely a place for nature lovers and is one of the few places in West Bengal which experiences snow. It is a favorite tourist spot offering spots for picnics, bird watching and trekking. It is a wonderful place to take pictures of birds during winter due to a number of migratory birds visiting this area. Lava has a charm that is appreciated by many people. 

Whole of Darjeeling and Sikkim is known as the land of Lepchas. This museum has many articles and ancient Lepcha instruments which many people have an interest towards. With the help of a guide you can understand the Lepcha creation myths. 

Lolegaon

It is a small hamlet and is surely a perfect place for nature lovers. The main attraction of this place is the hanging bridge. It is 55 kms away from Kalimpong town. It gives an excellent view of the Himalayan range.  From JandhiDhara the sight of the sunrise and sunset is completely worth it. It is also a perfect destination for animal lovers.

Durpin Hill

 It gives a breath taking view of river Tessta and the plains. It is amongst the highest points in Kalimpong that is accessible by car. Off the summit there is even a golf course present. 

It is a major sightseeing spot and even provides a perfect background for taking pictures. It is an attractive place to visit throughout the year and even provides a fresh stream of water.

Pedong Monastery

It is a Buddhist monastery and is one kilometer away from Damsang. Many Himalayan species can be seen in and around this monastery. This monastery is a much visit mainly for the marvelous display of the old paintings present here.  

It is situated in the hilltop of Kalimpong. It is a lovely monastery that’s worth a visit. This monastery is a non-profitable development association. It is under strict supervision under the Dalai Lama Administration. The walls by the door in the entrance are beautiful and the inside is even more beautiful. 

Though it has been visited only by a few tourists till now, it is a small picturesque hamlet and offers beautiful views from here

It is one of the most popular places in Kalimpong when view is concerned. The Kanchenjanga view from here during sunrise is something not worth missing out on. There is even a Tourist Lodge inside Delo where one can stop for rest and also to grab a bite.

This is also known as Mohanji nursery as it was built by Mohan Pradhan. It produces 80% of the gladioli that is found in India, and also has many varieties of orchid available here. It even has a nice collection of cacti and a beautiful view of Kalimpong.
