The fastest way to reach Assam is by taking a flight to Guwahati, the state’s capital, from any of the major cities of India, such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, among others. Guwahati’s airport, Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, is only 25 km away from the city and you can get a pre-paid taxi right outside the terminal. Head to the booking counter and state your destination to get your token. Hop into the next available pre-paid taxi and you are ready to set off on a holiday of your lifetime.
As the name suggests, Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport also offers a few flights to international destinations like Paro (Bhutan) and Bangkok (Thailand).
The state’s other airport is at Dibrugarh and it has seamless domestic connectivity with several major cities in India. Even citizens of Myanmar can travel till Pangsu Pass, from where they can take a flight to Dibrugarh. There are smaller airports in Assam that serve the purpose of connecting the districts within the state. India’s national carrier and most private airlines fly regularly to and from Assam.
The road network in Assam is quite good and several national highways pass through the state. The condition of the roads is excellent and should you choose to drive down yourself, you can have a comfortable road trip as you explore the state.
Assam is also serviced by government-owned state transport and private buses that ply regularly between major cities in neighbouring states and other destinations in India. The connectivity goes deeper, and you will find a bus that goes into the far remote corners of the state with ease. You can take a bus to Guwahati which is a major hub and then take a connecting bus from there. As beautiful as a road journey in Assam is, it could take quite some time, much longer than a flight or even a train ride. Moreover, we recommend avoiding the road during the monsoon as Assam is prone to flooding and landslides, which could leave you stranded for hours at times.
You can Visit Assam by road. The national highways connect Guwahati with Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. However, it is not a good idea to travel by road during the months of June to September as the state is lashed by heavy rains and the roads turn very dangerous.
How you choose to travel in Assam depends on how long you are staying there and what your main plan is. There are numerous commute options which include buses, trains or hiring a cab. The road and rail connectivity in the state is excellent, and you can reach the furthest, the most remote corners of the state even, with ease. Here are a few transport options that you can consider:
Buses:
Assam has an excellent bus infrastructure. Most major cities (and some more) in Assam are connected by buses to cities in adjoining states. This is one of the most commonly availed transport options by locals in Assam. The buses are well maintained and comfortable. Overnight long distance buses have reclining seats that make the journey more comfortable. You have a choice between Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses or private players.
Taxi:
If you are traveling as a family or a group, hiring a taxi makes sense. Finding a cab to rent is quite easy, even in towns and the smallest of cities. You can hire one to go sightseeing within a city or even hire it for inter-city travel. You can ask the hotel that you are staying at to book one for you. Alternatively, you can ask for information regarding car rental agencies. Self-driving is not recommended for several reasons – traffic is unpredictable, unless you are an expert, there are frequent agitations and protests on the roads, and some areas suffer from insurgency.
Train:
Assam has a fantastic railway network that spans the entire state and also connects to other cities in neighbouring districts. However, it is still not the best way to travel within the state. There aren’t too many options if you are looking to travel inter-city or inter-region. Moreover, Assam's rail network is rather fragmented because of different gauge size. The service on the narrow gauge and meter gauge lines is erratic and not very comfortable. Broad gauge service that links Guwahati with major cities in upper Assam (Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Tinsukia) fares better in terms of comfort but it takes less time to travel the same distance by road. If you like travelling by train and have the time to spare, this is a lovely way to see the beautiful countryside as it rolls past. You can book a ticket on the fully-air-conditioned Rajdhani Express for an overnight journey to Dibrugarh or Tinsukia from Guwahati. Tickets can be booked online on the official railway website or you can purchase them at the electronic ticketing counter at any station. Ensure that you have confirmed reservation before you board the train for your overnight journey.
Citizens of Myanmar can take a train from Ledo to Pangsu Pass, from where they can take a train to Guwahati. There is also an intercity express that runs directly from Ledo to Guwahati.
