Somnath is the first jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva located on the shoreline of Arabian Sea. It has been believed that Somnath was built in four phases: Gold, Silver, Wood & Stone. The Moon of God, Lord Soma was cursed by his father in law Daksha Prajapati because of which Moon lost its lustre and light. The Moon of God prayed Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was very pleased with the bhakti of Lord Soma & granted him light, curing his curse! Therefore, Lord Soma built a Golden temple for Lord Shiva. It was built by Ravana in silver; Lord Krishna built it in sandalwood & Bhimadev built the temple with stone.
Apart from being a pilgrimage for Hindus, Somnath is a perfect beach destination for the tourist and has many other attractions. Somnath is very near to Veraval and gate built to enter Somnath from Veraval is a triple gate which is stunning. Take out some leisure time & explore the architectural beauty of this monument.
