Gir Wildlife Sanctuary is a deciduous park that makes it an excellent habitat for the Asiatic Lions. Gir is worldwide famous for inhabiting Chowsingha- the only for horned antelope of the world. It is known that more than 200 species of exotic birds are present in Gir National Park. The total area of Gir National Park is 1,412 sq.kms. It also protects the endangered species of Long-billed and white-backed vulture. It has provided shelter to more than 40 species of reptiles including King Cobra, Russell’s viper, Saw-scaled viper and the Krait. One can find many Marsh Crocodile in one of the reservoirs of the Gir Sanctuary.
Gir is managed by the Wildlife and Forest department of Gujarat along with some NGOs that want to protect the endangered species. Plenty of water reserve are available in Gir for the fauna to survive. Gir is the largest dry and deciduous forest of India. It is famous throughout the globe for its environment that protects and provides shelter to the endangered species of the world like Asiatic Lions, Chowsingha and some species of Vulture.
A minibus takes the tourist around the Sanctuary for 30-45 minutes allowing you to spot many Lions, Python snakes near streams, monitor lizards, and marsh crocodiles in the Kamleshwar dam. Gir is not a safe place hence make sure you do not try jumping out of the jeeps/bus. Enjoy your ride at your risk. Many other carnivorous animals like Jungle Cat, Jackal, Hyena live here. Gir can be easily commuted through Rajkot or Jamnagar via train. It is 50kms away from Somnath. Make sure to visit World Famous Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary whenever you visit Gujarat.
