Best time to Visit Chardham
If you're looking to plan a Char Dham Yatra tour, timing is crucial. The four holy shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—are located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, and believe me, the experience gets ten times better when you travel at the correct time. Allow me to take you through the best time to visit and why it makes a difference.
Summer:
Summer is your season if you want a smooth, comfortable, and spiritually enriching Char Dham Yatra tour. From April onwards, the weather starts settling, with temperatures between 25°C to 35°C. Skies are clear, roads are open, and you'll see nature surrounding you just beginning to bloom. This is the time when all four shrines welcome devotees through their gates, so it's the best time to reserve your Char Dham Yatra tour Packages. And not only that—the atmosphere is pure and serene with a divine balance of sun and wind.
Winter:
This is the catch—winters in the Char Dham area are severe. Snowfall is intense, and because of the intense cold, the shrines close down entirely. The temperature goes below zero, rendering it impossible to conduct a safe Char Dham Yatra tour. This is the reason most tour operators suspend their Char Dham Yatra tour Packages for this season. Unless you are specifically visiting surrounding winter shrines or simply travelling through lower altitudes, it's advisable not to take a Char Dham Yatra trip during this period.
Monsoon:
If you're considering a Char Dham Yatra visit in the monsoon season, July to September, be cautious. The mountains appear brilliantly green, the waterfalls are flowing, but the risk of landslides, road blockages, and unsafe travelling methods increases the higher the area you travel. Always remember: "Many people will travel with a sincere devotion." Though unsafe! If you are among them, carry your rain equipment, monitor weather reports frequently, and be ready for potential delays. Some Char Dham Yatra Packages offer flexible itineraries during this period, so find packages that have that provision.
Visit the Thomas Cook India website to check out our Char Dham Yatra tour Packages and Uttarakhand tour packages during this period.

The 14-kilometre trek to the Kedarnath temple starts with Gauri Kund, another mythological location before snaking through the mountains with breathtaking vistas at every turn.

Resting along the banks of the Yamuna river, the Yamunotri temple is the least visited of all the Char Dham temples. Take a rejuvenating dip and wash away all your inhibitions in several hot springs located at the Yamunotri Temple. Watch other pilgrims cook potatoes and steamed rice that is offered in religious ceremonies or choose to help them fulfil their duties. The hike to this stairway to heaven commences at the quaint hamlet of Janki Chatti. If you find the trek difficult you can always take a pony ride to the top.
Gangotri
Identified as one of the holiest sites in the country, this town is the starting point for the trek to the source of the mighty Ganga. Make your way to Gangotri Village to purchase some woollen clothes, souvenirs and mementoes to take back home.
Rishikesh

With pandits chanting holy words and priests holding large censers in their hands, you will be awestruck with the spirituality of this city. It is lit up with the piety of a thousand devotees and the sparkle in their eyes as they set their diyas adrift on the holy river in the hopes of having a conversation with God. Har ki Paudi is deemed to be the most historically significant temple in the city. This temple is famous for its Ganga aarti, with thousands of devotees attending every day. It is known to be the exact spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the planes.
Significance of Char Dham
The Char Dham Yatra journey is not merely a travel itinerary; it's a spiritual journey, and if you've thought about this journey, you are now embarking on a journey that millions of people dream of travelling at least once in their lives. The circuit comprises Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, which are located in Uttarakhand in the Himalayas, and each of these four dhams represents an individual spiritual significance that makes this yatra so special.
The Chota Char Dham significance is massive for individuals of the Hindu faith, and it is necessary to learn about them prior to the yatra. Here is the importance of Char Dham Yatra according to each pilgrimage point in Uttarakhand
Importance of Yamunotri Dham
Importance of Gangotri Dham
Importance of Kedarnath Dham
Importance of Badrinath Dham
Importance of Yamunotri Dham:
Your journey of the Char Dham Yatra starts in Yamunotri, where Goddess Yamuna is revered. Not only a river goddess, she's also believed to be the sister of Yama, the God of Death. Bathing here isn't ritualistic—it's symbolic of safeguarding yourself from an untimely demise and cleansing yourself of past transgressions. Individuals who choose Char Dham Yatra Packages tend to experience an immediate change in their energy from Yamunotri itself due to its serene environment and mythological significance.
Importance of Gangotri Dham:
From Yamunotri, you proceed to Gangotri, the abode of the holy River Ganga. If you have heard tales of King Bhagirath bringing Ganga down from heaven, this is the place where it occurred. Bathing in the cold waters here is not just tradition—it's about cleansing your soul. Gangotri is part of most Char Dham Yatra tour Packages due to its unparalleled spiritual attraction and the feeling of rebirth you experience after visiting.
Importance of Kedarnath Dham:
Next on your Char Dham Yatra travel plans is Kedarnath, also known as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is said that the Pandavas came to Kedarnath to seek forgiveness for the sins they committed in the war of the Mahabharata. The temple’s location, deep amid towering snow-covered mountains, embodies an unparalleled energy of strength and peace. If you are attracted to Lord Shiva’s energy, this will be an unforgettable experience during your Char Dham Yatra trip.
Importance of Badrinath Dham:
Finally, your odyssey concludes at Badrinath, which is the residence of Lord Vishnu. Also referred to as "Badri Vishal," this Dham signifies knowledge, worship, and the ultimate salvation—Moksha. It is said that Adi Shankaracharya achieved salvation here and hence many prefer to end their Char Dham Yatra Packages with a trip to Badrinath.
Another factor that highlights the role of Badrinath in Char Dham Yatra importance is that it was the location where Adi Shankaracharya achieved salvation, freeing himself of the process of reincarnation. Individuals on the Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit end their Yatra by visiting this Dham to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu and achieve ‘Moksha”.
Famous Food in Chardham
The food at Char Dham is simple and vegetarian, you will find an abundance of potatoes, cauliflowers and rice in the area. The food is also sattvic at most places, focusing on subtle flavours, nutrition and wholesomeness. However, since you will be in Uttarakhand, where comfort food is the norm- here are a few binge-worthy dishes to dig into!
Kafuli/Kapaa - Do not miss out on this bowl of piping, hot spinach curry during your Char Dham tour, especially if you are visiting 4 Dham during the winter season. This could probably be Popeye the sailor man’s favourite dish! You could savour this dish in a bowl, just like soup or maybe with some steamed jeera rice.
Chainsoo - If you are missing home and longing for simple Ghar ki dal and roti, then you must try Chainsoo, a dish made of a variety of pulses with spices added to it. Local spices give this dish an earthy flavour and it tastes best with the Indian flatbread – roti.
Phaanu - If you are looking for a soupy meal that will warm your soul, do try Phaanu. Prepared from a variety of lentils and garnished with fresh coriander, this dish is best had with some steamed rice.

Aartis and festivals
Visit Mata Murti Temple in Badrinath
If you are a person who enjoys myths and lore relayed from generation to generation, then visit the Mata Murti temple, located a mere 4 km from the bus stand in Badrinath. It is a serene place where you can sit and think, and sense a different energy. The majority of Char Dham Yatra tour Packages these days have this as a stop, and understandably so.
Visit Rishikesh's Markets
Make time to venture out in Rishikesh. Stroll along the Lakshman Jhula market for yoga equipment, herbal remedies, and funky souvenirs. Haggling a bit, street food, and possibly even attending a drop-in yoga session. This small diversion gives your Char Dham Yatra tour a nice break.
Spiritual Getaway in Haridwar
Don't get into the hills without spending some time in Haridwar. The Ganga Aarti ceremony at Har Ki Pauri is not just a ceremony, it's a feeling. Seeing the lighted lamps carried away on the river and sounds of chanting echoing around you has a sense of calm that can not be translated into words. This enchanting feeling should be part of your starting or ending tour of the Char Dham Yatra.
Trekking
If you enjoy the mountains and don't mind a challenge, the Kedarnath and Yamunotri treks will thoroughly thrill you. The Kedarnath trek is challenging but so worthwhile—each step brings you closer to pine forests, meadows, and those awe-inspiring Garhwal mountains. The Yamunotri trek is similarly beautiful, along waterfalls and into deep valleys. Several Char Dham Yatra tour Packages offer guided treks, so you're guided and supported the whole way through.
Taste the cuisine
Ensure you sample the local food! Simple, wholesome fare such as Aloo Ke Gutke, Mandua Roti, and Khichdi is served at dhabas and temple kitchens. It's a heartwarming aspect of the journey, usually part of Char Dham Yatra Packages that include full-board accommodations.
Aartis and festivals
Don't miss the artist in the evening! With rhythmic chanting and lamps shining in the twilight, it's magical. And if you schedule your Char Dham Yatra to travel around temple opening or closing festivals, you get to see exquisite traditions. Several Char Dham Yatra tour Packages are organised around these dates to enable you to experience this grandeur.
It is now no secret that there is a range of activities and things to do that Char Dham yatra packages can offer. This combination of soulful temples, overwhelming culinary experiences, exquisite mountain views and bustling markets is the reason you should try our Char Dham yatra tour packages. What are you waiting for? Head to the Thomas Cook India website and book your Chardham yatra package as soon as possible! The 14-kilometre trek to the Kedarnath temple starts with Gauri Kund, another mythological location before snaking through the mountains with breathtaking vistas at every turn.
Yamunotri
Rishikesh
A yogic hub, this destination is a must visit on every pilgrim’s list. You hear it before you see it, with chanting from pandits lending serene background music to the surroundings. Watch devotees whisper prayers of hope under their breath, as set float their diyas onto the holy river. This holy hamlet feels divine. After all, it's one of the few places that will take you the closest to the presence of God.
Haridwar
If you cannot reach the stairway to heaven, don’t worry, you can take the gateway to the Gods in Haridwar instead.
